Overview
Urinary elimination is a fundamental physiological process essential for maintaining the body’s balance and removing waste products. This course provides healthcare assistants and caregivers with the knowledge and practical skills required to support patients with urinary needs safely, respectfully, and effectively.
The urinary system plays a vital role in filtering waste from the blood and maintaining fluid balance in the body. On average, a healthy adult produces approximately 1500 mL of urine daily, although this can vary based on factors such as fluid intake, age, illness, and medications.
This course explores normal urination patterns, factors affecting urinary elimination, and how to observe and report abnormalities such as changes in color, odor, or frequency. Learners will gain an understanding of various elimination aids, including bedpans, urinals, and commodes, and how to assist patients who are unable to use the toilet independently.
In addition, the course covers urinary incontinence, its types, causes, and management strategies, emphasizing dignity, proper care, and prevention of skin breakdown. Learners will also explore catheter use, including indwelling (Foley) and external catheters, infection prevention, and proper care of drainage systems.
Bladder training techniques and patient-centered approaches to promoting continence and independence are also discussed, ensuring caregivers can support patients effectively while maintaining comfort and dignity.
By the end of this course, learners will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to assist with urinary elimination, recognize abnormalities, maintain infection control, and promote patient safety and well-being.
