    Overview

Oxygen is a vital element required for life, playing a critical role in cellular function, energy production, and overall body stability. This course provides healthcare assistants and caregivers with essential knowledge and practical skills to support patients with oxygen needs safely and effectively.

Oxygen (O₂) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that the body depends on for survival. Without adequate oxygen, brain damage and death can occur within minutes. The body’s oxygen supply is influenced by factors such as illness, injury, and surgery, all of which can impair respiratory and circulatory function.

This course explores how the respiratory and circulatory systems work together to deliver oxygen to body tissues, as well as factors that affect oxygenation, including age, exercise, fever, smoking, and environmental conditions. Learners will also gain an understanding of abnormal breathing patterns and the signs of hypoxia, a life-threatening condition caused by insufficient oxygen at the cellular level.

In addition, the course covers practical aspects of patient care, including monitoring oxygen levels using pulse oximetry, promoting effective breathing through positioning and exercises, and assisting with oxygen therapy devices such as nasal cannulas and masks. Emphasis is placed on safety, proper observation, and adherence to care plans.

By the end of this course, learners will be equipped with the knowledge to recognize oxygen-related problems, support respiratory function, and contribute to safe and effective patient care.

    Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
    • Explain the importance of oxygen in the body and how it supports cellular function and survival.
    • Identify factors affecting oxygen needs, including respiratory, circulatory, and environmental influences.
    • Recognize signs of altered respiratory function and hypoxia, including abnormal breathing patterns.
    • Demonstrate methods to promote oxygenation, including positioning, breathing exercises, and monitoring techniques.
    • Understand oxygen therapy and safety measures, including the use of oxygen delivery devices and flow rate monitoring.
