    Overview

Infection control is a critical component of patient safety in healthcare environments. Microorganisms are present everywhere, and some microbes—called pathogens—can cause serious infections when they enter the body and multiply. Healthcare professionals must follow strict infection control practices to protect patients, staff, and visitors from the spread of infectious diseases.

This course provides an in-depth understanding of microorganisms, how infections develop, and the procedures used to prevent the spread of disease in healthcare settings. Learners will explore the chain of infection, the role of medical asepsis and surgical asepsis, and the importance of hand hygiene and proper equipment handling.

Participants will also learn about standard precautions, transmission-based precautions, and isolation techniques, which are essential for preventing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). The course will discuss the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), proper handling of contaminated materials, and safety measures outlined in the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard.

By the end of this course, learners will understand how infections spread, how to interrupt the chain of infection, and how to apply infection control procedures that protect patients and healthcare workers in everyday care situations.

    Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
    • Identify common microorganisms that cause infections.
Learners will recognize the five main types of microbes—bacteria, fungi, protozoa, rickettsiae, and viruses—and understand their role in disease transmission.
    • Explain the chain of infection and how infections spread.
Learners will describe the six elements of the chain of infection and understand how breaking any link can help prevent disease transmission.
    • Describe the principles of medical asepsis and surgical asepsis.
Learners will understand how clean and sterile techniques reduce the spread of pathogens in healthcare environments.
    • Apply standard precautions and transmission-based precautions.
Learners will identify situations that require personal protective equipment (PPE), isolation precautions, and proper infection control procedures.
    • Demonstrate practices that prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).
Learners will recognize the importance of hand hygiene, proper disposal of contaminated materials, and adherence to safety standards such as the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard.
