    Overview

Accurate measurement of fluids and body weight is a critical component of patient care in healthcare settings. This course provides essential knowledge and practical skills required for monitoring fluid balance and measuring patient weight safely and effectively.

Water is vital for life, and maintaining proper fluid balance is essential for normal body function. The body continuously gains fluids through food and drink and loses fluids through urine, feces, perspiration, and breathing. An imbalance can lead to serious conditions such as dehydration or edema, both of which can significantly affect patient health.

This course explores the concepts of fluid intake and output (I&O), including how to measure, record, and interpret fluid balance. Learners will understand normal fluid requirements, factors affecting fluid needs, and special fluid orders such as fluid restriction, encouragement of fluids, and NPO (nothing by mouth).

In addition, the course covers proper techniques for measuring patient weight and height, including the use of different types of scales such as standing, chair, wheelchair, bed, and lift scales. Emphasis is placed on consistency, accuracy, and following standard guidelines to ensure reliable measurements.

Learners will also gain an understanding of the metric system used in healthcare, including conversions between ounces, milliliters, kilograms, and pounds, which are essential for accurate documentation and patient monitoring.

By the end of this course, learners will be equipped with the skills to accurately measure and record fluid intake and output, monitor weight changes, and support patient safety through proper documentation and care practices.

    Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
    • Explain the importance of fluid balance, including intake and output and its impact on patient health.
    • Identify normal fluid requirements and signs of imbalance, including dehydration and edema.
    • Demonstrate proper techniques for measuring patient weight and height, using various types of scales.
    • Apply guidelines for accurate measurement and documentation, including consistency in timing and equipment use.
    • Perform basic metric conversions and interpret fluid-related data for effective patient monitoring.
